This poem is a little bit evil. I think it is in a wicked intonation and full of resentment. The protagonist fertilizes the tree with fears, tears, smiles, and soft deceitful wiles. It seems the Protagonist has already planned to poison his foe. And He knows the foe will come to eat the apple. Then the foe will die. “In the morning glad I see” means he is happy for achieving his goal.

I think it can be compared to the story of the Garden of Eden. Eve ate the apple of wisdom; therefore, God in order to punish them, expelling them from the Garden of Eden. God cursed them, Adam must be tired and sweated for living; Eve will suffer by birth. I think that’s why we call man’s world is a Purgatory. Everyman has their original sins. We came to this world for suffering.
