In western culture, “Rose” in literature is a symbol of love. However, Blake uses his unique way to transform the tradition image, giving a new ideological connotation.

Literally, “The sick Rose” is the description of a rose died for suffering an insect’s invasion in a stormy night. In fact, the “bug” and the “rose” in the poem are not only referring to an insect or a flower in reality, they are also symbols full of profound implication. Here, “rose” is a metaphor, implies female beauty, love, or a sensor pleasure. The “bed” in this poem not only means flower bed itself, but also can refer to women’s bed. Similarly, the “crimson joy” symbolizes intrinsic beauty of red roses, but also alluding to a joy of sex. The love in this poem appears in a morbid state, the cause is the “invisible worm”.

The whole poem implied the dark secret love led love no longer pure and beautiful, made love lost its innocence and chastity. From this, the inner meanings in this poem are abundant, no exact answers. This poem expresses a certain sense: “innocence” was destroyed by “experience” that kind of ideas.
